Radcliffe Booters Fall Victim To Last Minute Bowdoin Goal

The Radcliffe soccer team opened its season on Saturday, losing to Bowdoin, 4-3. The loss was particularly frustrating because the Crimson had come from behind to tie the game twice.

Radcliffe was constantly on the defensive, overcoming a 2-0 halftime deficit. And after Bowdoin regained the lead, freshwoman Sue St. Louis (two goals) skipped 30 yards through the center of the Bowdoin defense to even the score. Radcliffe basketball stand-out Ellen Hart played well in her soccer debut.

It all went for naught with 1:20 remaining when a Bowdoin cross bounced past a surprised Radcliffe goalie, Irene Kacandes.

Coach Bob Scalise was philosophical about the last tally: "As far as a fluke, a lot of goals in soccer are scored that way." Scalise was encouraged by the team's play and singled out Kathy Batter for her fine play on defense and bringing the ball upfield.

Radcliffe plays Smith at home on Thursday, and Boston College Saturday.
