The central coordinating council of the Harvard-Radcliffe Hillel Society elected its first permanent chairman Thursday night, following a year of rotating leadership.

Rabbi Ben-Zion Gold, director of the Harvard-Radcliffe Hillel, said yesterday the election of Mitchell K. Ross '78 represents the final stage of Harvard Hillel's three-part transition from a rigid president-vice president structure to the more cooperative system of a chairman elected by the 12-member coordinating committee.

Continuity

Ross said yesterday his election was part of "an effort to provide continuity" for Hillel. Hillel's operations were disorganized last year because of the prior decentralized system of committees and rotating chairmen.

"Having one person that will look at the entire situation is going to add force and coherence to the students' contribution," George M. Wyner '80, a member of Hillel, said yesterday.

Harvard Hillel aims during the next three years to extend its activities through the use of its new headquarters at 78 Mt. Auburn St., Ross said.

Hillel's new building, however, will not be ready for occupancy this year, because the two million dollars required for renovations and maintenance has not yet been raised, Gold said.
