Harvard Policeman Attacked Thursday; Two Suspects Held

A Harvard policeman was assaulted last Thursday night allegedly by three male youths he had tried to question about a recent break-in, a police spokesman said yesterday.

The officer, whom police refused to identify, was "set upon" by the youths near the intersection of Kirkland and Trowbridge Sts., several blocks east of William James Hall, Captain Jeffrey Cahn of the University Police said yesterday.

Kahn said the officer was "kicked and beaten" by the youths but was able to call for help.

He was treated at Cambridge City Hospital for injuries to his left leg and returned home Friday.

Two suspects were arrested and charged with the alleged asault soon after. The Harvard Police received assistance from the Cambridge police in making the arrest, Cahn said.

The unidentified caller who informed The Crimson about the attack said the incident occurred while the police officer was "defending Harvard." He declined to comment further.
