Amos Otis slammed his third home run in two games and veteran Cookie Rojas knocked in three runs as the Kansas City Royals charged past the Boston Red Sox last night, 8-4.
It was the sixth straight defeat for the defending American League champions, dropping them into sole possession of last place in the A.L. East with a 6-11 record.
The Sox opened the scoring in the second inning when Rick Burleson's RBI double dropped into short centerfield between three Royals. Rico Petrocelli drove in Jim Rice in the fourth for Boston's second tally.
Otis tied the contest an inning later with his long blast off loser Fergie Jenkins, now 1-4. The Royals went ahead in the sixth on a fielder's choice and a bases-loaded single by Rojas.
Rice pulled the Sox within one with a two-run double in the eighth, but K.C. got three more in the ninth and held on for the win.
