Mather Overcrowding

THE MAIL

To the Editors of the Crimson:

I am writing to express my deep concern about overcrowding at Mather House. As a resident of Mather, I am worried about both the housing situation of present residents and that of rising sophomores next year. Though all the Houses will be crowded, it is clear that Mather House will be the most overcrowded, especially in terms of living space per person, lack of privacy and crowding of common facilities. The recent assignment of freshmen to Houses indicates that Mather House will be even more uncomfortable next year than this, with a total of 507 people assigned. I feel that this kind of crowding, particularly when it is unequally shared, seriously detracts from the academic experience of all residents.

The reassignment of, perhaps, 30 freshmen to other Houses would equitably help the situation, especially because Mather was one of the least popular Houses in this year's House selection.

I am extremely fond of living at Mather House and do not believe that the unreasonable crowding of one House should ruin that fondness. Christopher Rowen '78
