Varsity Tennis faced a punchless sparring partner in MIT yesterday and walked off the courts with a predictable and highly convincing 9-0 shutout.
The Engineers failed to get up enough steam to take any of the singles matches. The top six Crimson racquetmen, Gary Reiner, Todd Lundy, Dan Waldman, Kevin Shaw, Jim Levy, and Andy Chaikovsky, respectively, all manhandled their opponents in straight sets. Levy enjoyed the biggest rout of the day, winning "breadstick, bagel," 6-1, 6-0.
The doubles matches found MIT more competitive, but no more victorious. The number one pairing of Waldman and Cliff Adler triumphed 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. The second tandem of Lundy and Shaw stroked to an easy straight set win, 6-1, 6-3.
Reiner and Chaikovsky, although nailed 2-6 in the first set, righted themselves in the last two, 6-4, 6-1, to complete the sweep for the Crimson.
Head Coach Jack Barnaby was bed-ridden with the flu, but David Fish, heir to the Racquet Czar's throne, was at the controls for the derailment of the Engineers and termed the whole affair, "a very untaxing match." The real season begins this weekend when the squad travels to Pennsylvania on Friday and Columbia on Saturday to face two talented Ivy League squads.
