Radcliffe varsity tennis faced a talented roadblock on Saturday, as Yale brutally shifted it into reverse with an 8-1 clouting. The Crimson racquetwomen had previously cruised to four wins in as many matches.
The strangest thing about the match was not how it was played, but where. Apparently the bigwigs in the Yale athletic department considered Saturday's 80-degree, no-wind weather inclement for the match, so they held the contest indoors.
The result was a tanning out of the sun rather than in it. The women in white managed to win only four sets all day, but Coach Corey Wynn proudly commended the squad for guts beyond those in their rackets. "Yale was used to their indoor courts, and besides, they are an extremely potent team," he said.
The Eli-etttes laid goose eggs on the Crimson at key spots. Denise Thal got friend at number one by the gifted Sue Graham, 6-0, 6-1. Sally Roberts at the second spot wiped the eggs off her face from a 6-0 defeat in the first set and her her opponent, Floridian Karen Feldman, 3-2 in the second set before narrowly losing the sixth game and three thereafter for a 3-6 defeat.
Lissa Muscatine and Rita Funara at three and four both won their first sets but could not sustain that pace. Captain Muscatine triumphed, 6-4, but was then thwarted 1-6, 3-6, while Funara squeaked by, 7-6, before developing a blister and suffering two painful defeats, 4-6, 2-6.
Personal Best
Coach Wynn described freshman Diane Olney's performance as "one of her best" as she pasted Val Tebbetts 7-5, 6-2 for Radcliffe's only victory of the day. The jubilation was short-lived as Yale's Sarah Coal buried number six Andy Okamura 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the match for the Elis.
Yale iced their victory cake by sweeping all three doubles matches without losing a set. Thal and Muscatine were outmuscled by Graham and Feldman, 4-6, 2-6. The second tandem of Roberts and Funara won only two games in their entire match. A third pairing of Okamura and Kathy Fulton came the closest, but they were checked by identical scores of 4-6.
