Bill Carey, this season's varsity basketball captain, was given a tryout on Tuesday as a receiver with the New England Patriots, and was subsequently invited to their rookie camp, which will open in July.
The 6 ft. 5 in. Carey hails from Charlievoix, Michigan--the home town of Patriots head coach Chuck Fairbanks. And while Carey did not play any football in his four years at Harvard, wanting to concentrate just on basketball, his high school football talents were known to the Patriots.
The Pats, apparently looking for a backup tight end for Russ Francis, wanted to see "if I had the raw talent to make the camp," Carey said. His workout consisted of running some pass patterns, receiving passes from the arm of Pats receiver scout Ray Perkins, and running a 4.7-second 40-yard dash.
Carey said that he was offered $20,000 if he survives the camp cuts and makes the team. He said, however, that he does not think he will continue with the tryout. He has a job with Proctor and Gamble next year.
