David R. Fish '72 will be the head tennis and squash coach next year, replacing John M. Barnaby '32, who is retiring from the position he has held for 30 years.
Fish has worked closely with Barnaby as assistant varsity coach for the past two seasons. As an undergraduate he captained Barnaby's 1972 tennis and squash teams, and was ranked fifth nationally among collegiate squash players.
Following Big Footsteps
"Dave faces a tremendous challenge following in the footsteps of one of the alltime great collegiate coaches," Robert B. Watson '37, director of Athletics, said yesterday.
But Watson said he feels Fish will have no major problems stepping into Barnaby's shoes, although 20 of the retiring coach's squash teams won national intercollegiate nine-man championships during his tenure here.
Carrying on the Tradition
"Dave Fish has many of the same qualities as Jack Barnaby," Watson said. "I'm confident that he'll carry on the tradition and reputation of Harvard tennis and squash."
Jeff Wiegand, captain of this year's varsity squash team, agrees. "Dave will follow Jack Barnaby's methods to a great extent," he said, "although I'm sure they'll reflect Dave's own style."
"If anybody can continue Jack's successes, Dave will," he added.
