Two-Way Street

Two representatives of the Russian Research Institute of World Economy spoke yesterday at the Russian Research Center in a program arranged by the International Research Exchange Board.

Vladmir I. Gantman, professor at the Institute of World Economy, and Peter A. Vares, a researcher there, explained Russian conceptions of detente and European security.

Gantman said his government desires to preserve detente, but that "Soviet policy of detente has nothing to do with the artificial preservation of the status quo."

"All participants in detente must get over the paranoid complex of the Cold War and the domino theory," he said.

Gantman denied that detente was a "one way street" for the advancement of Soviet interests. "There are no losses for you, no losses for us; we pay for the wheat, you never owned Angola, and Gulf Oil chooses to stay there," he said.
