Approximately 55 students transferred from the Quad to River Houses this semester, and about 35 students, including 13 Yard freshmen, moved up to the Quad, a survey of 11 House offices indicated yesterday.
Eleanor Marshall, assistant to the deans for housing, said Monday she hadn't yet compiled any "hard statistics" on second semester transfers. But she said most of the 113 sophomores who received one of their bottom three choices in last spring's housing lottery had moved from the Quad to the River.
Marshall said those who had not yet moved were "holding out for triples. Others deferred and haven't been in to see me yet about moving."
Thirty-nine of the 56 moved from South House, Shirley Broner, the South House secretary, said yesterday.
Broner said, "A lot more than normal moved this semester, probably because a lot of spaces opened up at the River, and we may have just had that many more of the 133 bottom-choice sophomores placed here in South House."
Jessica Sandler '78, who moved from Leverett House to South House this semester, yesterday said, "I hated Radcliffe with a passion last year even though I hardly knew anything about the place. But I didn't like Leverett particularly, so I just decided to move up to the Quad. I like the Cliffe very much--it's nice to remove yourself from Harvard, to get away when it becomes overwhelming."
Drew Fixell '78, who transferred from South House to Quincy, said yesterday, "My roommates and I moved mainly because we wanted a suite, which would have been hard to get at the Cliffe. We also wanted the proximity to the Square and prefer the rowdier social life in the River houses. The Cliffe secmed a bit too quiet."
