Leverett Conducts House Referendum On Smoking Bans

More than 300 Leverett House residents voted yesterday and Thursday on whether to institute smoking restrictions in their dining hall.

Students were asked to choose between a complete ban on smoking or its limitation to certain section of the dining hall. Voting results have not yet been tabulated.

Megan Lesser '78, Leverett House committee chairman, said yesterday impetus for the restrictions came from approximately 20 house residents. The committee then voted to hold a referendum "because of the sensitivity of the issue," Lesser said.

Dudley House, which divides its dining hall into sections for smokers and non-smokers, is the only house with dining hall smoking limitations.

Adams, Dudley, Lowell and Leverett Houses control smoking in house libraries.
