Quad Skating Rink

No definite decision has been made regarding the proposed skating rink in the north end of the Radcliffe Quadrangle, several administrators said Sunday.

Nevertheless, the possibility that one-third to one-half of the Quad will be flooded before winter is out seems good. "Death and taxes are certain, and the skating rink is next," John W. Hastings, master of North House, said Sunday.

There is significant student support for the skating area, which would partially alleviate what Stephen Rapp '78 called "the atrocious lack of athletic facilities at the Quad."

The final decision must wait until Quad House masters can meet with Francis A. Lawton, assistant dean of the Faculty for facilities, who is currently on vacation. Ten days ago, Lawton said the chances for funding the skating area were "fairly good."

Students have skated in the Quad in the past, when snow melted and then froze into a lake. Only the extremely bumpy surface of the natural rink has prevented people from using it every year.
