Acorn Will Get Dallas Tryout

The Dallas Tornados of the North American Soccer League (NASL) have invited David P. Acorn '77, standout forward and co-captain of the soccer team, to a tryout this Saturday at Mercer County Community College in Trenton, N.J.

Acorn said yesterday he had expected for a long time that a professional soccer team would contact him.

He said he had also expected that he would have to try out to prove his abilities, since a knee injury this year cutailed his playing time.

Knee Surgery

Acorn underwent knee surgery in August for a smashed fat pad suffered last May. He played at less than his peak throughout the season, and it was not until the final two games that he could run full out, he said.

Should the Dallas club sign him, Acorn does not plan to pursue a long-term career in professional soccer. He said that any contract he signed with the Tornados would not be lucrative, but that playing pro soccer, even for a short time, would be the fulfillment of a life-long dream.

Others Interested

Three other NASL franchises in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles have contacted coach George Ford and expressed interest in signing Acorn. However, none of these teams has invited him to tryouts, Acorn said.
