Bok To Make TV Appearance On NBC'S 'Meet The Press'

President Bok will make a televised appearance this Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press, two years after one of his vice-presidents wrote him a memo saying he should make the University more accessible to the media.

Charles U. Daly, former Vice President for government and community affairs, specifically wrote in the note that Bok should agree to appear on Meet the Press.

Bok said yesterday he had been asked to appear on the program five years ago when he took office at Harvard. He said he told the producers of the show he felt it would be better for both himself and the program if he waited until he had gained more experience on the job.

When the producers asked him again to appear this year, Bok said he was ready.

The panel of journalists that will ask Bok questions is not limited to any particular topic. Although Bok said yesterday he has no idea what he will be talking about, he added that he will not be uncomfortable discussing any part of his job or his educational philosophy.

Bok appeared on television only once before, on the Today Show. "I don't seek appearances because I'm not looking for publicity, and I want to spend as much time as possible working at Harvard," he said.

Betty Cole Dukert, producer of Meet the Press, said yesterday other university presidents, including former Harvard President Nathan M. Pusey '28, have appeared on the show.

The panel of journalists that will ask Bok questions this Sunday will include Lawrence E. Spivak '21, of the NBC news staff; Thomas Braden, of the Los Angeles Times; and Edward B. Fiske, education editor for The New York Times.

The moderator will be Bill Monroe, executive producer of the show.

Meet the Press will be broadcast on the NBC television network at noon on November 28 and repeated on NBC radio at 9:36 p.m.
