Yale, Brown Stay on Top As Ivy Race Narrows

First place in Ivy football competition became a bone of contention between Yale and Brown last weekend as both teams retained their claims to the top slot by vanquishing Cornell and Harvard, their respective opponents.

Elsewhere in the league, Dartmouth clung to its tenacious title hopes by beating Princeton, 34-14, despite a host of Big Green mistakes, while Penn stole a last-minute victory from the Tigers, overcoming Princeton 10-9.

Fired-up

A fired-up Cornell offense gave Yale a scare last Saturday as the Big Red ran rampant for a total of 440 offensive yards, but the Eli defense stood firm. Yale prevailed, 14-6.

Cornell penetrated the Yale ten-yard line after long offensive drives three times, but was consistently stifled by the tenacious Bulldog defense. The last Cornell charge came with less than two minutes left in the game as the Big Red advanced from their own 24 to the Yale five-yard line, where the drive was halted.

Dartmouth had more than its share of problems, but Columbia proved even more adept at throwing the ball away, as the Green rolled to a 34-14 victory, despite two interceptions, two fumbles, a blocked punt and nine penalty calls.

The big play came early in the fourth quarter when Columbia, down by 14 points, fumbled on the Dartmouth seven-yard line. Dartmouth's John Mugglebee fell on the ball, setting up a 93-yard drive that resulted in the final Green touchdown.

Penn quarterback Bob Graustein performed heroics before a stunned Princeton home crowd as the Quakers edged the Tigers, 10-9, with a clutch, last-minute touchdown drive.

For most of the game, Graustein acted the goat, throwing three interceptions and losing three fumbles. But with 1:41 remaining, Penn got the ball on its own 30-yard line, and Graustein led the Quakers to victory in eight plays, ending with a touchdown pass to Jim Cioffredi.
