Riesman Declines Offer

David Riesman '31, Ford II Professor of Social Sciences, said yesterday he does not feel qualified to be a Supreme Court justice, even though former Senator Eugene J. McCarthy mentioned him as a possible nominee for the position if he should be elected president.

McCarthy proposed Riesman's name in a speech on Saturday, in which he also named five of his choices to fill cabinet posts, including Boston Mayor Kevin H. White as attorney general.

Riesman said he is "touched and pleased" by McCarthy's announcement.

Riesman, a 1934 graduate of Harvard Law School, clerked for Justice Brandeis and worked in the New York District Attorney's office and a law firm in Boston before returning to teach. "I gave up the law even before I entered it, in a sense," he said.
