False Alarm

A false fire alarm in Lamont Library early yesterday afternoon forced about 150 students studying for exams to evacuate the building. The alarm was apparently activated by cigarette smoke, a library employee said.

The Cambridge Fire Department responded within five minutes to the alarm, which went off shortly after 2:30 p.m. After a brief search of the building, the firement concluded that there was no fire and students were allowed back into the building.

Edward S. Terrell, a part-time library employee who was working at the check-out desk when the alarm sounded, said that smoke-detectors probably activated the alarm after catching wind of cigarette smoke somewhere on the fourth floor.
