Pickets, Wine In the Square

Noted in Passing

Outside of California, support for the United Farm Workers, the union that has opposed the Teamsters in the San Joaquin Valley, has been greatest in New York and Boston.

In Harvard Square, UFW backers this year fought for the grape-pickers on a scrap of pavement outside the Harvard Provisions, Inc.

Harvard Pro stubbornly insists on marketing wines produced by the E. & J. Gallo winery of Modesto, Calif., a firm that has--just as stubbornly--maintained its contracts with the Teamsters.

UFW supporters led stormy pickets of the store though the fall, and when Harvard Pro sued, so did the UFW. An out-of-court settlement earned the picketers the right to parade up to six quiet picketers in front of the store.

The UFW pickets have marked occasional Saturday nights with sober vigils since then, but Harvard Pro proprietors have maintained with slightly more spirit that sales haven't decreased one shot.
