Area College Students Fight Cutbacks

Students Rally For More Spending

Two thousand students from UMass Amherst UMass Boston and Boston State College rallied on the Boston Common in front of the statehouse yesterday to voice demands for higher spending on public education.

Student spokesmen and UMass Amherst Professor Samuel S. Bowles called upon Governor Dukakis and the legislature to change government priorities from profit making endeavors to human service projects.

Moratorium

Students at UMass began a moratorium on classes Monday in response to the Dukakis administration's plan to cut state spending, including public education, by 10 per cent. The administration stated yesterday that "a failure to cut would be immoral."

The rally elicited a pledge of support from Speaker of the House David M. Bartley, while many students yesterday asked for support from their own legislators
