MIT Faculty Seeks Powers of Review After Iran Contract

The MIT faculty will vote Wednesday on proposals resulting from dissatisfaction over a contract with the Iranian government to train nuclear engineers in a special program at the school.

MIT has agreed to accept up to 54 Iranian students in a Master's degree program of nuclear engineering to help establish nuclear power facilities in Iran.

Many faculty members have objected that they were not informed or consulted on "an issue of such obvious controversy" prior to the signing of the contract, Phillip Morrison, Institute Professor of Physics, said.

The proposals call for the establishment of a committee to review all future programs with outside institutions and governments.
