A fine performance by the spee team highlighted what was as otherwise mediocre display by the Crimson fencing team at the International Fencing Association Championships at MIT yesterday.
Sam Anderson won eight of 11 bouts to had the open team to a fifth place finish in the 12-team tournament, and Mac Simmons and John Hirschfield both did well, winning five of 11 apiece against exceptionally stiff competition.
But Marion said he "expected much more from the full team." Shifting John Major to full proved to be a mistake, for Major could only master one victory in six bouts. All-American Phillips Bennett was the only bright spot in foil, casily making his way into today's finals.
Captain Gordon Rutledge in sabre may also reach the finals today, and could lead the team as a whole to a respectable fifth or sixth place finish.
