George Wald, Higgins Professor of Biology, told 200 people here last night he is "hopeful" that pressure from senators and private sectors will force the State Department to grant a waiver to the Chilean singing group to complete its American tour.
A spokesman for the State Department spokesman said last night that a motion to grant a waiver to Quilapayun is currently "under review" and that a decision will be reached shortly on the matter.
A State Department spokesman said Tuesday that under immigration laws members of Quilapayun are "excludable types" because of alleged Communist Party connections and require a special U.S. government waiver to enter the country.
Wald told the group, organized by sponsors of the Quilapayun concert that if the government decides to grant waivers to the seven members of Quilapayun they will perform in Cambridge March 25. They were originally scheduled to perform last night in Cambridge.
