The Harvard fencing team defeated weak Holy Cross last night by a 22-5 margin.
The sabre team was undefeated in the match, winning all nine bouts. All-American Gordon Rutledge led the way with a 3-0 performance. Sophomore Mike Payne, in his first varsity match, was also 3-0.
Harvard had its toughest time in the folly, losing four bouts. Star Crimson foilman Phillippe Bennet was 1-2, as was John Major, who returned to foil after a brief fling the last few matches at sabre, Larry White, also at sabre, was 2-0.
The Harvard epee-men had an easy time with their Crusader opponents, taking eight of the nine bouts.
"We didn't fence all that badly," Major said "but it's hard to fence well against a weak team."
The fencers have their last match of the year against Yale this Saturday.
