Northeastern Romps Over Injury-Riddled Thinclads

A psyched contingent of Northeastern thinclads left Harvard in the starting blocks Saturday afternoon, as the Huskies sped to a 75-43 trouncing of the Crimson at Northeastern's Solomon Track.

Northeastern pounced on an injury-riddled Crimson crew at the outset, as it copped firsts in four out of the six field events. Harvard's usually potent field squadron was hampered by the absence of co-captain Blayne Heckel, out with a pulled hamstring, and long-jump artist Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, who is still nursing a knee injury sustained in the GBC's.

Harvard mentor Bill McCurdy said yesterday. "The field team has been carrying the track team on their backs all year and considering the injuries I thought it did well."

Weightman Dan Jiggetts, feuding with the flu, was able only to grab a second in the 35-lb, weight and a third in the shot put. Kevin McCafferty was second in the shot behind NU's Len Rao.

Embree Again

Mel "What else is new?" Embree flopped his way to yet another cage record as he went over the bar with a leap of 7 ft. 1/4 in. And triple jumper Ahmed Kayali scored the only other first for Harvard in the field, hop, skip and jumping 46 ft, to victory.

Harvard's downfall however, came in the middle-distance races. Northeastern caught the Crimson lacing its shoes as the Huskies swept the 600, the 1000 and the mile.

"In all three events they had more fire power than us. We simply couldn't go with them," McCurdy said.

Mike Hickey led the Huskle pack, as he blazed to one of three cage records set Saturday, breaking the tape in 2:12. The distance events saw Northeastern throw double trouble at Harvard as twin brothers Bob and Jon Flora paired up to gain a dual victory. Bob ran away with the mile in 4.10.9 time and Jon won the two-mile event.

"One of the boys is supposed to be a significantly stronger runner than the other," McCurdy said. "I'm afraid we haven't figured out which one it is yet."

Harvard's shining star in the meet was hurdler Sam Butler, Butler won his individual event in the strong time of 6.6 seconds and then teamed up with John Maggio, Gary Schmidt and Joel Peters to lead the mile relay to the third cage record of the day, as they turned in 3:25:5 winning time.

Co-captain Steve Niemi, who placed third in the weight throw, summed up the meet: "Although the list of injuries sounds like a hospital report, one of our big problems was the unfortunate scheduling of the meet. Despite the injuries, I think we might have been looking beyond Northeastern to the Heptagonals. Northeastern was really up for the meet and we simply weren't."
