The Crimson grapplers' quest for third place in the Ivies gained momentum yesterday as the matmen picked up, pinned, and pounded a weak Brown team in Providence. The final score was Harvard 36, Brown 3.
The highlight of the meet was Kip Smith's pin at heavyweight. Mike Wallace, at heavy for Brown, beat his Yale opponent last week 10-7 and was undefeated this season in the league. He didn't keep his undefeated status long as sophomore Smith took him down early in the first period and pinned him soon after at 1:46.
Harvard started the meet strong with two consecutive pins. Mitch Silverman dropped his opponent at 118 in 5:45, Milt Yasunga, at 126, topped Silverman's performance, overpowering his man in 4:14.
An undersized John Keough, wrestling at 190, played cat-and-mouse with his lion-sized opponent. Unable to pin him because of the weight disadvantage, the 174-1b. Keough had to settle for a 16-7 victory. "Keough looked very good on his feet and had a lot of take-downs," Coach John Lee said last night.
Harvard took honors at all but 134 as Tye Richardson lost a decision, 4-3, to Brown. Richardson missed a tie by one second, the one-point spread coming from 1:01 of Brown's riding time.
The rest of the Crimson's scoring came from three-point decisions in the remaining six events.
