To the Editors of The Crimson:
In response to Carlton M. Smith's letter concerning "meatless meals," we would like to point out that:
1) The CHUL referendum will not be held "after Spring break" (as Mr. Smith said), but "in early March" (according to the minutes of the Jan. 15 CHUL meeting).
2) Before CHUL even considered the program, a referendum was held by undergraduates completely unconnected with CHUL. Of the 1000 people participating 93 per cent voted for some change in the present menu selection. CHUL decided to hold an official referendum after the start of the experimental program to give undergraduates a chance to evaluate the changes fairly, and to give the Food Services a chance to adjust to the new menu system.
3) Mr. Smith will be able to eat animal protein every day of the week, if he wants to. Chicken or fish will be available on each of the two meatless days. It is plain the program could represent little real change from the present menu; it is hoped that people will choose to eat less meat on their own initiative, out of concern for the world food situation and their own health.
4) With a 12 per cent inflation rate, the negligible savings from the menu change will quickly be eaten up.
We would like to suggest that Mr. Smith, and anyone else interested, could gain a clearer understanding of the changes by reading the first part of the February issue of BETWEEN ME-N-U. Peter L. Havens '74-3 Jeffrey W. White '75
