Harvard's rugby teams knocked off powerhouse Princeton in two of three contests Saturday morning at Soldiers Field.
Mike DiMateo scored twice and the backs did some fancy passing throughout the game as the "A" team blanked the Tigers, 20-0. In the opening minutes of the game, DiMateo kicked the ball away from a Tiger fullback and won a foot race to the endzone for four points--all that the Crimson would need for the victory.
Gary Bond made the two-point conversion, and when Sabin Willet blocked a punt and fell on it in the endzone, Harvard owned a 10-0 half-time lead.
The ruggers kept the pressure on in the second half, as Richie Sherman and DiMateo both broke away for long scoring runs.
The "B" team also built up a 10-0 halftime lead, going on to win 18-0. Terry Martin scored on a 20-yard run, then passed to John Bernloher for another score. Sam Pillsbury added a two-point conversion on the first tally.
Durham In From Ten
In second half action, Jim Durham scored from ten yards out, then blocked a kick with 10 minutes remaining. Jim Feldman carried the loose ball across the endline for the final touchdown.
Harvard's only loss came in the closely contested 6-0 "C" game.
The pair of triumphs represented a turn-around from several early-season losses. Student coach Dave Wagner said yesterday "There are a lot of young players on the team and we're rebuilding." He attributed the turnaround to "more serious practicing."
