An overgrown Radcliffe tennis squad travelled to Wellesley yesterday to nose out a 5-4 victory.
Scheduled to play three singles and six doubles matches, the Crimson team had to dip into the junior varsity lineup to fill its ranks. Captain Lissa Muscatine said after the match, "A varsity team carries at the most eight players and usually about six or seven. We had to use 15 to play this meet."
In the first singles slot, Denise Thal came from behind to down her opponent, 7-5, 6-4. Thal said yesterday, "I started to play to her forehand more. She was very tall and missed a lot of shots because she didn't get down low enough to return them."
Coach John McCarthy said after the meet yesterday, "Thal is a much stronger player this year. She's a lot tougher mentally."
Muscatine took the second singles match, 6-4, 6-3, while freshman Sally Roberts in third singles won 6-3, 6-0.
The other varsity racquetwomen--Ann Koufman and Rita Funaro in the first doubles position and Kathy Fulton and Diane Olney taking on the second doubles competition--defeated their opposition and pushed the "Cliffe team ahead 5-0.
McCarthy said after the meet, "I was the most pleased with the doubles. Everyone was volleying crisply. Diane and Kathy played the best they have all year."
The Crimson squad dropped the other four doubles, all of which were played by their junior varsity.
Yesterday was the last dual meet of the fall for the Radcliffe netwomen who will finish the season next weekend by competing in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament along with 40 to 50 other schools at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Muscatine and Thal, who took first place in the Greater Boston Tournament two weeks ago, will team up again in the Cliffe's first doubles slot while Sally Roberts will lead the singles thrust.
