Spider John Koerner, so named because he's long and thin, is at Passim's this week, from July 17 to 21. Spider John is a local boy and a longtime veteran of the blues-jugband-rag scene around here. He hasn't been in town for a while, and deserves a warm welcome back.

Souther, Hillman and Furay, are at Tufts Thursday night at 8. They're a new band, part of the constantly regrouping L.A. good-vibes country-rock scene. Chris Hillman is an ex-Byrd, Richie Fruay an ex-Poco and J.D. Souther an ex-producer and solo artist. Like most superstar bands with names that remind you of law firms, Souther, Hillman and Furay will probably split up after a record or two--so catch them while they last.

Rockem Sockem, at Katy's in Boston this week, are fairly standard fare. However, Tuesday night there's a bump dance-contest at Katy's with a trip to Spain for the winners, and this is by no means to be missed.

Isis, an eight-piece all-woman band is at Paul's Mall today followed by the fantastic Bobby Blue Bland from Wednesday to Sunday.

Roy Haynes and the Hip Ensemble is (are?) at the Jazz Workshop this week. Haynes is a very good jazz drummer who has played for Coltrane and other greats, but who can listen to somebody play drums for two hours?

Abraham Comfort, an Israeli violinist, is playing a concert tonight at 8 p.m. at MIT's Kresge Auditorium. He'll be accompanied by pianist John Buttrick in a program of Bach, Mozart, Dvorak and Beethoven.
