A New College Boss

The talk of University Hall now is a new move by Rosovsky that may well eliminate Kiely's position entirely--the creation of a new undergraduate deanship.

Throughout the year, Rosovsky has been pleased with the way his bureaucratic relationship with Dreben has worked out. Having one person in charge of all GSAS matters takes a lot of the burden of daily administration off of Rosovsky's shoulders, while in College matters he has found that people often bring their problems to him--which takes up a lot of time Rosovsky would rather be spending in other ways.

So in the next few weeks, he will announce the appointment of the new associate dean of the Faculty for Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges--it is likely to be a man well into middle age with a tenured position in the Natural Sciences and little administrative experience. He will be Whitlock and Kiely's boss, although Rosovsky may not refill Kiely's post at all after Kiely leaves it. And he will, Rosovsky hopes, help him become a little less of a dentist while coordinating the administrative and educational aspects of undergraduate education.
