Netmen Smash Dartmouth, 7-2, To Earn Sixth EITA Victory

The Crimson varsity tennis team registered its sixth EITA victory of the season last Saturday by demolishing Dartmouth, 7-2, on the Palmer Dixon Courts across the river.

The win upped Harvard's record to 12-4 overall, with two nonleague defeats and two crucial EITa losses to Pennsylvania and defending-league champion Columbia. The Crimson, which finished 7-2 last season for third place in EITA standings, still must face rival Princeton, which finished second last year on an 8-1 record.

Little Competition

Dartmouth, as expected, offered little competition as Harvard extended its current winning streak to seven games. The Big Green dropped all six singles matches, five of them in straight sets, and won the second and third doubles contests by narrow margins.

Harvard's top player, Ken Lindner, defeated senior Rick Woolworth, 6-3, 6-2, while second man John Ingard, a junior from Lincoln, Mass., edged Rob Tesar, 6-4, 7-6. Gary Reiner, in the third singles slot, downed Steve Davis, 6-3, 6-3.

Chip Baird topped Jim Myers in straight sets in the fourth singles match, and Hugh Hyde, in the sixth position, smashed Dan Magee, 6-1, 6-1. The Big Green's fifth player, John Glover, took freshman John Horn to three sets before losing, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, in the day's closest match.

Lindner paired with Gardner Rowbothom at first singles, downing Woolworth and Myers, 6-3, 6-2, and then Hyde and senior Charlie Krusen, combining at second doubles, fell to Dartmouth's Tesar and Glover, 6-4, 6-4.

Harvard's third doubles team of Sandy Wilson and John Thornton, neither regular starters, dropped a 7-5, 6-4, match to Davis and Magee, as Dartmouth collected its second token victory.
