Radcliffe's red hot tennis team racked up its ninth consecutive win of the year yesterday, a tough 3-2 win over a squad from Wellesley College.
The victors were strongest in the doubles matches, as the Sukie Magraw-Rita Funaro duo easily dispatched their opponents, 6-3, 6-1. In the other doubles match, Radcliffe's Kathy Agoos and Maude Wood whipped the pair from Wellesley, 6-4, 6-2.
Captain Lissa Muscatine, playing number two, provided the highlight of the singles matches. The sophomore crushed Debbie Knopman in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The number-one singles match saw freshman Denise Thal drop a rough 5-7, 4-6 match to Ginger Horne. At number three, sophomore Cheryl Gelzer captured the first set, 6-4, but eventually fell before Sally Burford, 0-6, 4-6.
"We played well", captain Muscatine said after the match, "considering the psychological letdown we might have had coming off our win over unbeaten Brown on Saturday". In their quest to notch the first undefeated season for Radcliffe tennis in a long time, the women will play their final team match next Monday against a solid Wheaton squad.
Saturday and Sunday, the team will travel to Mount Holyoke for the prestigious Seven Sister Ivy Invitational.
"We're going to put all our strength into the doubles matches next weekend", Muscatine said, a strategy which will hopefully result in victory over the powerful Princeton women. "They are much too strong for us in the singles", she added, "but we may beat them in doubles".
In the invitational, Radcliffe's lineup will consist of the team of Thal-Muscatine at number-one doubles, and Magraw-Wood at number-two.
