Cornell Drubs Crimson Laxmen, 20-1

Cornell scored, literally. Twenty Big Red goals found their way past Harvard's defensive sieve Saturday afternoon at the Business School Field as the Crimson dropped its home opener and third straight varsity lacrosse match, 20-1.

Cornell's Middie-attackmen Mike French, a sophomore, and senior transfer Jim Trenz, continued their prolific scoring paces. Trenz netted 6 goals and had six assists. His 12 points fell one shy of the Ivy single-game scoring record. French was only two points behind, scoring five goals and setting up five more.

The Crimson had trouble generating any kind of offense and came close to being shut out. The lone Harvard goal came with five seconds left in the third quarter when, on extra-man offense, sophomore attackman Kevin McCall took a feed from junior middie Bruce Bruckman and shot it past goalie Francis D'Amelio.

McCall now has four goals, the team-leading mark, and he is tied for scoring honors with junior attackman Jim Quinn, who has two goals and two assists.

Alas poor Bruce and Leroy, the Crimson goaltending tandem. Netminders Poliquin and Thompson were no match for the relentless Cornell attack. Sophomore Poliquin only fended off two shots on goal while eleven got by. Thompson, a junior, fared little better. He stopped eight shots but nine more went in.

At the other end of the sun-soaked, grassy field, D'Amelio and Mike Emmerich, a first team all-Ivy selection last year, only had to contend with 10 shots on goal, including the one that escaped D'Amelio.

Beginning at 4:20 of the first quarter, Cornell scored so quickly and seemingly at will that at the end of the game only the official scorers were sure of how many times the Cornell stickmen had riddled the Crimson nets.

"This is one of the best teams in the country [seventh-ranked in the nation in pre-season polls]", coach Bruce Munro, in his last year as varsity head, said Saturday. "But the men played well in spite of the big Cornell leads."

"But the fellows didn't quit. They kept hustling, something that's hard to do in a game like today. We've finished the toughest part of our schedule now. We'll get on the winning side of the board yet, I guarantee it," Munro promised.
