The National Collegiate Athletic Association selected its nine-at-large teams Thursday for its tournament: Notre Dame, Marquette, Pitt, Providence, South Carolina, Oral Roberts, Syracuse, Creighton and Dayton.
The National Invitational Tournament selected four teams yesterday for the annual college basketball event at Madison Square Garden. The four were Hawaii, St. John's, Massachusetts, and Manhattan. Thirteen teams remain to be chosen for the tourney, held March 16-24.
The talent pool for the NIT has been reduced this year by the Collegiate Commissioner Association Tournament which is assured of representatives (other than champions) of eight major conferences.
