The Crimson thinclads jumped out to a big lead in the Greater Boston Championships last night in Briggs Cage by winning every field event in the first half of the meet.

Harvard trackmen swept the first three places in both the high-jump and the triple-jump and took first and second in the pole vault.

They took enough places in the other three events--the long jump, the shot put and the 35-lb. weight--to win 53 points, surpassing Northeastern's 22 and Boston College's 18.

"We needed a big lead in the field events to put us in a competitive position tomorrow," said Crimson coach EdStowell after the activities. "I think now we have an excellent chance to win the meet."

The running events will be held today in the second half of the meet at Tufts's indoor facility at 1 p.m.

Stowell pointed out two outstanding individual performances of the evening. "Kevin McCafferty set a personal record in the shot put, and Steve Niemi made his best throw ever in the 35-lb. weight," he said.

McCafferty's 50-foot 7-inch shot and Niemi's 58-foot 10-inch throw won each a third place.

"It was also good to see Ahmed Kayali competing again," Stowell added. Kayali, who was injured earlier in the season, took a third place in the triple jump with a distance of 45 feet 10.5 inches.
