Over 250 freshman have expressed interest in living in the Yard next year, F. Skiddy von Stade '38, dean of freshmen, said yesterday. He said the response is significantly greater than anything he expected when he asked for 125 volunteers two weeks ago.

Ninety roommate groups of from two to five people have picked up applications, von Stade said, although the number of final applicants will not be known until the application deadline March 1.

In a letter sent to all freshman two weeks ago, von Stade asked for volunteers in order to avoid assignments to the Yard by "some impersonal method."

Fringe Benefits

Von Stade attributed the tremendous response to the "fringe benefits" offered to attract volunteers. Von Stade has promised volunteers single bedrooms, one of their first six hall choices, and the opportunity to live in an all sophomore entry.

If the final number of applicants exceeds 125, von Stade said there will be a lottery to determine who will live in the Yard.

Bruce R. Rosen '77, one of the freshman applicants, said yesterday that the main attraction of the offer is the guarantee of a single bedroom. "The person I'm going to room with has a girl friend," he said, "and the guarantee of a single bedroom is great news if you have a girl friend."

Von Stade said that he would hold a meeting in the Union on Tuesday, February 26, to answer any questions about accomodations in the Yard next year.
