Tom Wolfe broke out to an early lead that was never challenged as the non-chalant Harvard swim team coasted to an easy win in a locally-televised 400-yard medley race in the MIT pool last night.

MIT finished a distant second, followed by Tufts, Boston College and Northeastern. The Harvard team set a new MIT pool record for the medley with a time of 3:40.4.

The race was never in doubt, though coach Ray Essick admitted the team had just come off a long workout yesterday afternoon. Tom Wolfe established the huge early lead in the backstroke with a time of 55.

The Other Legs

Ted Fullerton swam the second leg and increased the lead with a 60.9 time in the breast stroke. Hess Yntema followed with a 53.5 in the butterfly, and Wes Raffel finished the race, cruising in with a 51.1 in the freestyle.

Essick described the performance as "mediocre," coming off a big win against Princeton Saturday. Before the race, Essick predicted the team would go all the way this season and capture the Ivy League crown.
