Harvard's undefeated varsity hockey team, leading the Ivy and ECAC standings after two key triumphs over Boston University and Brown, begins a six-game holiday-season stretch tomorrow night when it meets the Bruins at Watson Rink in its last Ivy-ECAC contest before school resumes in January.
The Bruins will seek to avenge last weekend's 5-3 defeat in Providence, when the Crimson's Paul Haley scored a hat trick to pace Harvard's offense. The Crimson, 3-0 in the Ivy League, will try to extend its unbeaten streak to six games, while Brown will attempt to better its 2-1 Ivy record.
On Monday Notre Dame makes its first appearance ever in Cambridge, having trounced Harvard, 5-2, at South Bend Ind., during Christmas break last year. Sophomore Brian "Dukie" Walsh, a former Matignon High School star, has earned 27 points to lead the Irish, who stand 7-8-1 with a game against Boston College scheduled for this Sunday.
Harvard heads to Detroit for the Great Lakes Tournament on Dec. 27 and 28, meeting Michigan in the first round while Yale battles NCAA runner-up Michigan Tech. The Wolverines have defeated formidable Michigan Tech twice this year, but three of their regular skaters have been suspended for the Harvard tilt.
Defenseman Greg Fox, first-line winger Frank Werner, and first-line center Angie Moretto, the top scorer, all received major fighting penalties in Michigan's last game, an 8-3 loss to Michigan State. A Western Collegiate Hockey Association rule states that a player who receives a fighting penalty is automatically given a game misconduct and a game suspension.
Looking For Rematch
Harvard and Michigan Tech are expected to advance to the tournament finals for a rematch of last year's NCAA semifinal battle, which the Huskies won, 6-5, in overtime. The Crimson defeated Michigan Tech, 4-2, to win the Great Lakes Tournament in 1972.
Harvard plays its final two holiday games away against St. Louis on Jan. 3 and 5. The Billikens lost 5-4 in overtime twice last weekend to defending NCAA champion Minnesota, and they currently stand 10-8 with four games scheduled before the Harvard series.
