Cambridge school superintendent Alflorence Cheatham announced yesterday that he has withdrawn his letter of resignation.
In a press conference yesterday morning Mayor Walter J. Sullivan said that the Cambridge School Committee accepted Cheatham's decision not to resign.

Cheatham said that he decided to remain in office because of the support that "students, parents, community people, school staff and members of the school committee" had shown for him in the past week.
Cheatham submitted his resignation last Tuesday after a dispute with the Cambridge Civic Association over hiring practices.
In a September 25 letter the CCA accused Cheatham of "mismanagement of personal appointments." The letter said Cheatham was slow in recruiting and quarterback, directed a third-period drive and hit Taylor in the end zone on a 25-yard pass. The kick was good, and Harvard led, 34-14.
It stayed that way until late in the final quarter when the Terriers got two quick ones within five minutes, the second with only a minute left. They missed both conversion attempts, and Harvard held on for the victory, 34-26
