Racketwomen to Open Autumn Season

Most Starters Returning

The Radcliffe tennis team kicks off its fall season today with an opening match against Wellesley at Wellesley. Match time is 4 p.m.

Radcliffe will have intact virtually its entire starting line-up from last year's undefeated 10-0 squad. Radcliffe lost only Kathy Agoos to graduation from last year's team.

Coming back are key players sophomore Denise Thal at one, Captain Lissa Muscatine at two, sophomore Suki Magraw at three, and junior Maude Wood at four.

Radcliffe will be playing without the services of regular number five Rita Funaro, so transfer student Jinny St. Goar will move up to the five slot from her usual six position. Funaro cannot play because of a class conflict.

Aside from the loss of Funaro, Radcliffe will be at a couple of other minor disadvantages. Coach John McCarthy's charges have been practicing on Harvard's clay courts so far this fall, but will have to play on hard-courts at Wellesley.

Also, there will be a three singles-two doubles format instead of a six-three set-up. Radcliffe, because of its greater depth, would benefit from the latter combination.

Three-Two Format

With the three-two format, McCarthy plans to use Thal, Muscatine, and Magraw at singles, with Wood and St. Goar at one doubles pairing.

Despite the obstacles Radcliffe will face, the team is confident it will whip Wellesley.

"Wellesley is a solid team," said Captain Muscatine, "but I think we can beat them."
