Radcliffe Tennis Powerhouse Rolls On; Endicott Wins Only One Match of Nine

Coach John McCarthy's awesome Radcliffe tennis team tallied yet another lopsided win yesterday as it walloped Endicott Junior College, 8-1.

Clean Sweep

En route to its third consecutive victory of the season, Radcliffe swept all six single matches. The squad's only setback of the afternoon came in the second doubles match as Debby Klonsky and Rhonda Williams bowed to Endicott's Lisa Finck and Sue Brackett, 6-4, 6-2.

Most impressive in the victory for Radcliffe was Denise Thal. Thal pounded Endicott's Pat Pilz in the top singles match, 6-4, 6-2. Thal and Pilz clashed again in the first doubles event as newcomer Marsha Davenport teamed with Thal for a 6-4, 6-3 Radcliffe triumph.

Radcliffe captain Lissa Muscatine said she "didn't feel challenged" by Endicott's Carol Mullen in the number two slot. Muscatine won easily, 6-2, 6-2.

Other Radcliffe victories included Suki Magraw in the three slot, 6-4, 6-1; Maude Wood in the fourth singles match, 6-1, 7-6; Rita Funaro playing five, 6-1, 6-2; and Jill Robertson in the sixth position, 6-1, 6-0.

Display of Power

Endicott coach Barbara Maitland said she was not surprised at Radcliffe's display of power. "We've been playing weaker teams, and decided to try our luck with a stronger one," she said. Maitland said the Endicott women's unfamiliarity with Radcliffe's clay courts was a factor in the match. "I've been watching my girls slide around all day," she said.

The raquetwomen will now hone their skills for the upcoming Greater Boston championships on October 19th and 20th. Captain Muscatine said she was wary of a "tough singles draw" in the event, but said that Radcliffe had a "very good chance" for the team title.

Radcliffe's last event of the fall season will be the New England Womens' Collegiate Tennis Tournament at Yale, October 25-27.
