Rep. John Brademas '49 (D-Ind.), chief deputy majority whip and chairman of the House Select Subcommittee on Education, was elected Chief Marshal of the Alumni for this June's commencement, the University announced last week.

Brademas will preside at ceremonial events on Class Day and lead the procession of graduates to the annual alumni meeting.

Later Success

From his home in Washington yesterday afternoon, Brademas said that he was very pleased with the position. "I hope that I have as much success in the elections later this year," he said.

Brademas who is also a Harvard Overseer, said that he is "not unhappy" with Harvard's move to co-educational housing. "I think the College is now a looser place, and I mean that in the best sense of the word," he said.

He said that student interest in national politics has declined since the 1969 strike. Brademas attributed this downward trend in part to the absence of a rallying point for involvement which the Vietnam war had provided.

"I hope students will not react to Watergate by withdrawing, but rather by plunging vigorously into the fray," he said. "After all, politicians are not all crooks."

Brademas is also in charge of the fundraising effort for the class of '49 in the Washington and Baltimore area.
