Swimmers Beat Chiefs, 93-20; Crimson Capture Every Event

The Harvard swimming team, sweeping to first place in every event, trounced Springfield, 93-20, last night at the IAB. The win extended the Crimson's dual meet record to an impressive 6-0.

Crimson coach Ray Essick said afterwards he used the meet primarily to evaluate the team's progress after three weeks of rigorous training in Puerto Rico over the Christmas holiday.

Experimentation

He experimented with the lineup throughout the meet and the list of firstplace finishers reflects the team's depth and versatility.

Sophomore Hess Yntema turned in the meet's most impressive swim. He captured the 200-yd. freestyle with a clocking of 1:43.8. That time is a mere one-second slower than the University record held by Harvard co-captain Fred Mitchell.

Mitchell himself figured prominently in last night's victory, winning both the 50-yd. freestyle and 500-yd. freestyle events. He also swam on the victorious 400-yd. freestyle relay team.

Freshmen George Keim and Ted Fullerton were double winners for the Crimson. Keim captured his specialty, the 100-yd. freestyle and swam on the 400-yd. medley relay team with Fullerton. Fullerton also won the 200-yd. breast stroke event.

Remaining Winners

The remaining Harvard winners included freshman Peter Tetlow in the 200-yd. butterfly, freshman Brent Haywood in the 200-yd. individual medley, junior Dave Brumwell in the 200-yd. backstroke, and freshman Neil Martin in the 100-yd. freestyle. Martin covered the 1000 yards in a very fast 9:47:7.

In the diving, Crimson freshman Roger Johannigman and sophomore Dave English dominated. English captured the one-meter competition and Johannigman placed second. In the three-meter they exchanged places, with Johannigman taking the honors.
