FRIDAY: Tora! Tora! Tora! I never saw this $25 million production, but I sure was unimpressed with the preview clips in which the Japs bomb the living shit out of our boys at Pearl Harbor. I imagine there's lots of action and maybe even some blood and gore to sustain the kind of dull plotless romance one generally finds in war movies (and at Harvard). This movie bombed at the box-office and crippled traditional Hollywood in the same way the Japs scuttled the Pacific Fleet. 8:30 on Channel 7.

From Here to Eternity. This academy award winner is cheap stuff as romantic narrative, but the acting and the characterization make it worth watching. It's a subdued 1940's version of Easy Rider (the lonely outcast line et. al.). Montgomery Cliff is superb, and one could almost learn to like Frank Sinatra from this flick. By the way, this is the role that Sinatra got due to mob pressure when his career was at its low point. Midnight on Channel 7.

SATURDAY: Speaking Freely. Those of you who think t.v. is not strictly for escapists, illiterates, bored pseudo-literates, or lonely people, should watch this show. Heinrich Boll, the 1972 Nobel Prize winner for literature, opens up on a variety of subjects, including war, the victimization of the weak, and dehumanization in a materialistic society. Heavy stuff, true, but it might get you ready for Monday (then again, it may convince you to drop out). 6:00 on Channel 44.

Cool Hand Luke. Paul Newman plays the kind of role only a Nixon could dislike in this tale of a one-man fight against the cruelties of a southern chain-gang. His attempts to buck the system make him something of a charming Christ figure to his fellow prisoners. Unfortunately, Pontius Pilate has always had the last laugh in this kind of Christian symbolism, and resurrection wasn't written into the script. If you liked Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, you won't want to miss this. The supporting cast is good too, with George Kennedy in an Oscar winning performance. Try to see this in color; some of the images will lose their power in black and white. 9:00 on Channel 4.

SUNDAY: Football at 1 p.m. (Eagles vs. Giants, channel 7) and 4 p.m. (Dolphins vs. Raiders, channel 4).

The Bank Dick, starring W. C. Fields as Egbert Souse (accent grave over the e), the bank guard. A classic, especially the chase scene at the end. 4:30 p.m. on channel 38. Funny Girl, starring Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice, with Omar Sharif and Walter Pidgeon to back her up. Won lots of Oscars, accolades, etc. 7:30 p.m. on channel 5.

Evening at Pops, starring Eubie Blake, who is 90-years-old and a ragtime pianist. 8 p.m. on channel 2.

Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet, starring Edward G. Robinson, reportedly at his finest, as the discoverer of the cure for syphilis. Also Maria Ouspenskaya, who played the gypsy in The Wolf-Man. 7:30 p.m., channel 56.
