Crimson Crew Third in Pierrepont Heat

Harvard's junior varsity heavyweight crew failed to make the finals of the first Holmes Pierrepont regatta for elite eights at Nottingham, England, Saturday, finishing third behind varsity powerhouses from Northeastern and the University of Washington.

The Eastern Sprint champion Huskies from cross-town rival Northeastern went on to take the laurels in the afternoon finals held over the newly opened 2000 meter course at the five-million dollar National Water Sports Center.

The Dogs finished the finals with a time of 6:40.9 as compared to the clocking of 6:48.4 for surprise second place finished Wisconsin second varsity. Washington finished third in 6:48.7.

In the qualifying heat, Harvard broke to an immediate lead after the first ten strokes and appeared to be in command, at least temporarily, before judges called back the field at the 100-meter mark for a restart. When the heat was rerun the Crimson failed to stay close as both Huskies crews--Northeastern and Washington--advanced to the finals. Northeastern also had a winner in the finals of the fours-with-cox.

The Harvard junior varsity will hope for a better showing Wednesday when it competes in the Royal Henley Regatta.
