Harvard's superb pole vaulter Jim Kleiger added another record to his collection last weekend, winning the IC4A pole vault competition and setting a new IC4A record with a jump of 16 feet, 7 1/4 inches.
Kleiger, who already holds both the indoor and outdoor Harvard pole vault marks, topped the old IC4A standard by 3 1/4 inches Kleiger was the only Harvard trackman to win an event at the IC4A championships held last Friday and Saturday in New Brunswick, N.J.
While Kleiger's performance at the IC4As was good enough to set a new standard for the meet, it misses by 3/4 inches of his previous best, an outstanding 16 feet, 8 inches set this spring against Army.
Kleiger set the Harvard indoor record in last February's GBC title meet, with a jump of 16 feet, 6 inches.
Kleiger's record-shattering win in the pole vault was unquestionably the top Harvard performance of the meet, but John Quirk almost won himself a share of the limelight with a second place in the mile. Quirk ran a fast 4:04.4, edging out Villanova junior Brian McElroy at the wire to take second behind Manhattan's Tony Colon. Colon finished one second ahead of Quirk at 4:03.4.
In other IC4A action, Sam Butler took a fourth in the 440-yard intermediate hurdles, Nick Leone grabbed fifth place in the 440-yard dash and Mel Embree finished fifth in the high jump.
As a team Harvard came in tenth with a total of 14 points. Navy won the 1973 IC4A title with 41 points, followed by Maryland and Penn State which tied for second at 29 1/2.
