Thinclads Enter Penn Relays Today

Harvard's varsity thinclads, who routed Princeton in this season's first dual meet last Saturday, will come up against much stiffer competition today and tomorrow at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Furthermore, co-captain Bob Clayton, sprinter Baylee Reid and hurdler Dewey Hickman, all troubled with leg injuries, will not compete in the two-day track and field event.

Shape of Their Legs

"We won't have them compete this time," associate coach Ed Stowell said. "The shape of their legs is still questionable."

Co-captain John Quirk will lead the Crimson hopefuls in the four-mile relay and distance medley, two of the six track events in which coach Bill McCurdy's charges are entered.

Jim Hughes, Wayne Curtis and Bill Durette will join Quirk on the relay team and Curtis, Nick Leone and Jim Springate round out the distance medley team.

In the field events, freshman star Mel Embree will high jump, Jay Hughes will throw the 16-pound hammer and Dick Gilbane is the lone Harvard discus thrower. Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace will compete in the long jump and triple jump. Ahmed Kayali will join Vanderpool-Wallace in the triple jump. Jim Kleiger and Blayne Heckel will be the team's pole vaulters.

Freshman Sam Butler, who won one first and three third places against Princeton, will run the intermediate hurdles. He and Randy Buckley are the probable starters in the ten-school heptagonal mile relay. Rick Rojas, and possibly Durette, will handle the three-mile run.

No Prediction

"With so many schools and variables, it's almost impossible to measure how well a team will do," was McCurdy's appraisal of his squad's chances.

Stowell agreed, "It's hard to predict what will happen when you don't know who'll be competing from other schools. All we can do is hope for decent weather and hope our men register better performances than they've turned in so far.
