3 Youths Charged In DeLuca Beating

A Cambridge court issued warrants yesterday for the arrest of three East Cambridge youths charged with beating a Cambridge patrolman Tuesday.

The patrolman, Peter E. DeLuca, was one of two officers who arrested Lawrence P. Largey shortly before he died in a jail cell last October. Largey's death, the subject of a recent grand jury investigation, touched off several nights of rioting.

Police have charged two 16-year-olds, both residents of Roosevelt Towers, and Gary W. Bergan, aged 18, of Cambridge St., with assault and battery. Bergan was also charged with threatening the DeLuca's life. Police were unable to identify a fourth youth who they claim was present at the beating but did not take part in it.

Bergan and one of the 16-year-olds were taken into custody yesterday. Police said that the juvenile was released to his parents and that Bergan is being held on $500 bail. The second juvenile will turn himself in today, police said.
