Phantom India. French film maker Louis Malle has made one of the great documentaries of recent years. Banned in India.
Father Panchali. The first film in Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy is one of the best films to come out of India. As a sort of fictional documentary, the film focuses on middle class life and post-war Indian culture under assault from Westernization.
Limelight. Chaplin keeps reminding us of his earlier films -- not of the little tramp he used to play but of the range of emotions his skilled movements could bring forth and of the warmth in his eyes. Yet this recently re-released 1952 film is a disappointment because it is so insistently verbal and thus undercuts the very basis of Chaplin's art.
